It was a gloomy Sunday morning when the urge to breathe some fresh air struck. We knew it would be a windy journey, but decided to choose sand in our eyes over chores. Half awake and lazy, we were looking to just drive around the corner. We managed to find a little gem tucked away on Bainskloof Pass - The Witterivier.
The trail is made up of gravel road which heads uphill into the mountains of Limietberg. The walk may seem disappointing at first since there is nothing but hard rocks and dry shrubs, but fear not, the most spectacular views overlooking Bainskloof await. With the horizon as a backdrop, you’re sure to start feeling a sense of serenity.
The first landmark is a pier-styled memorial just slightly off-route to the left. Keep walking forward until you reach a man-made boulder in the bushes (also on the left). This can easily be missed, so when you’ve crossed over a bridge, you know you’ve gone too far. Continue walking towards the boulders and cross over the bushy field. On the left, you will eventually reach the most rewarding feature this hike has to offer. A gentle stream fills the belly of the mountain. Large rocks are majestically placed on the slopes surrounding the coke-coloured natural pool. As the river flows deeper, the vegetation becomes thicker, creating a surreal jungle vibe.
We spent the day chilling on the rocks, sipping some hot coffee (yes coffee!), watching the clouds float by. Even though things felt grey and windy, this little charm managed to brighten a cold winter day.
